Technique 3: Provocation & Redirection

This facilitation technique involves provocation (a facilitative move that explicitly names the taboo subject that participants are not directly addressing in conversation) or redirection (a facilitative move that makes a statement or request that explicitly changes the focus of conversation)
Strategies/examples of this technique are as follows:
  • "Playing the devil's advocate here, what if..."
  • "There seems to be something that is unsaid/understated here...?"
  • "Let's push ourselves to think about this-why else might it have portrayed in this way?"
  • "If you asked the question in a different way, how do you think the results would change?"
  • "But have you thought about it this way?"
